After-SAR Party

Although the Coast Guard and Auxiliary are always on-call should the need arise, the After-SAR (Search and Rescue) party signifies an end to the largest portion of the annual Search and Rescue season.  This time of year most Auxiliarists and Coast Guardsman are winterizing their personal boats and preparing to further their education in the winter months. One way we celebrate a successful season is to get together and enjoy some fellowship amongst all the people involved in making our waterways safer during the course of each year.

Upon leaving the After-SAR party Auxiliary Facility 343409 (Two Captains) came across this 40ft. sailboat which found out the hard way why A COAST GUARD AUXILIARY PUBLIC EDUCATION COURSE CAN BE MOST BENEFICIAL. The vessel, in moderate to high winds ran aground on sand and rocks at the entrance to the "Sand Pit" in Cold Spring Harbor. While approaching the vessel it was noticed that water was being bailed from within the cabin. The vessel's Captain indicated the water being bailed was from an open valve which had just been closed and declined Coast Guard assistance, deciding to wait for the tide to come back in (a several hour wait). The name of this vessel has been withheld to protect the guilty.
